Editors’ Picks of the Week: Tudor, Rolex, and Jaeger-LeCoultre

Great Watches Under $5,000

Tudor Black Bay GMT: The Modern Vintage Pepsi

The Tudor Black Bay GMT is probably the best alternative to the Rolex GMT-Master II, but it still manages to stand out on its own merits.
The Tudor Black Bay GMT is probably the best alternative to the Rolex GMT-Master II, but it still manages to stand out on its own merits.

I could really put any Tudor watch in this category. Rolex’s sister company has mastered the art of offering outstanding quality and great design at reasonable prices. To top it off, they’ve managed to give their watches that little extra something to make them even more desirable. This is especially true for certain Black Bay models, including the Black Bay GMT. In my opinion, this watch offers the best overall package of any Black Bay. It has all the advantages of a diver – a robust case, cool aesthetic, and water resistance – plus a GMT and date function. The “Pepsi” bezel also boasts a unique color scheme. While most manufacturers use loud, bright hues, Tudor has opted for a darker, more subtle mix of navy blue and burgundy red. Next to the matte black dial, the bezel affords the watch a unique look. In typical Tudor fashion, the watch boasts vintage charm despite being a very modern timepiece. By no means does the Black Bay GMT have to hide behind the better-known Rolex GMT-Master; it wins in terms of price and has a completely independent character.

Enthusiast’s Corner: Rare and Exceptional Timepieces

The Rolex Datejust 16233 “Saudi Arabia Dial:” An Ordinary Datejust With a Rare Emblem

The Datejust with a "Saudi Arabia Dial" is a rarity. Take a closer look to see what make it so unique.

Have you come across Rolexes with brand logos from Domino’s Pizza or COMEX? Other watches feature coats of arms or emblems instead of logos on their dials. While low production numbers make these timepieces rare collector’s items, I don’t think the watches impress from looks alone. Many of the logos are a bit too bold for my taste and seem out of place. The Datejust with a “Saudi Arabia Dial,” on the other hand, is different. The emblem of Saudi Arabia, located at 6 o’clock, is much more aesthetically pleasing than its bright branded logo counterparts. Plus, none of the colors clash with the rest of the dial. In fact, the gold logo coordinates perfectly with the hands and indices on the two-tone version with a white dial. That’s what makes this Rolex so great, in my opinion. At first glance, you have a typical Rolex, but when you take a closer look, you discover the little dial detail that makes it so unique. This watch is not only extremely rare but also really special. It is a collector’s item that still easily fits into any wardrobe.

Iconic Timepieces: Great Value for Money

Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Chronograph: Under the Radar

This Jaeger-LeCoultre model is arguably the most elegant sports chronograph available on the market today.
This Jaeger-LeCoultre model is arguably the most elegant sports chronograph available on the market today.

It’s amazing how the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Chronograph manages to be so sporty and elegant at the same time. You’ve probably read about numerous watches that supposedly suit both casual and formal attire, but the claim has never been more true than with the JLC Polaris Chronograph. Can you think of any other sports chronograph that truly looks great with a suit as well as jeans and a T-shirt? The Polaris Chronograph stands out for more than just its looks, however. Its 42-mm case is the perfect size for a chronograph and stands just 11.9 mm tall. Its design is unique, its movement beautifully decorated, and its bracelet of the highest quality. The display case back offers a view of the movement at work. The best thing about the Polaris Chronograph, however, is its dial. The wearer can marvel at the mix of different textures and finishes, including smooth, rough, glossy, and matte. Take the watch out into the sunlight to witness the dial in its full splendor.
