Fall Trends 2022: From the Wardrobe to the Wrist

By Chrono24

The days are getting shorter, the nights cooler, and slowly but surely, we are getting used to the idea that the heat of summer 2022 is a thing of the past. With a deep sigh and nostalgic thoughts of balmy summer evenings, we are digging to the depths of our wardrobes to pull out our fall attire. Yes, it’s time to get the house, garden, and car ready for the coming winter season, but we also need to reframe our wardrobe. I can barely remember back to fashion week last February, when the latest trends for fall and winter 2022 were unveiled. If you’re in the same boat, no worries – who wants to think about next fall/winter when spring is just around the corner? I certainly was more focused on tucking my winter coat away to the back of my closet…

So, let’s go back and review a few of the trends. While we’re at it, we’ll also clarify the most pressing questions for watch enthusiasts: Which watch from your current collection will shine brightest this autumn? And is there any room for a new addition? Here are our top three fall trends, from wardrobe to wrist.

1. Chunky Knits and the Grand Seiko SBGY007

While this trend may recall a line from Macklemore’s song “Thrift Shop,” there is no denying that chunky knits that look like they could’ve come from your grandpa’s closet are back in fashion. From checkered sweaters and V-neck cardigans to thick, knitted pullovers in bold colors and patterns, anything goes these days. But it’s always good to pair a chunky statement piece with classic, modern companions to make it more suitable for everyday use (think white T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers).

The same goes for your wrist companion. Timeless design paired with innovative Spring Drive technology and a touch of history – that’s what the Grand Seiko SBGY007 “Omiwatari” has going for it. This 38.5-mm stainless steel watch is mounted on a crocodile leather strap, giving it an overall classic appearance – until you take a closer look at the dial, that is. Here, the watch stands out with colors and textures designed to evoke the snow-covered ice of Lake Suwa. Inside the case, you’ll find the Spring Drive caliber 9R31 offering a power reserve of 72 hours; a power reserve indicator is located on the case back. This reliable timepiece could be yours for an official list price of $8,300, but unworn models can be found on Chrono24 for as little as $7,100.

2. Show Your Colors With Rolex and Oris

As soon as the gray days start making an appearance, the world of fashion embarks on a counterstrike: Bring out the courageous color combos! Bold is in. Pink and red tones were particularly dominant on the catwalks this year – just check out the Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, and Paul Smith fall collections. If you’d like to experiment with this color palette, you might start by choosing a subtler variant or selecting a single, eye-catching piece. This is where timepieces with a bold color scheme can come in handy.

One good example is the Rolex Oyster Perpetual in Coral Red (ref. 124300) – and not just because the color alone will turn some heads. This model was initially presented in 2020, but discontinued in spring 2022, which makes the watch all the more desirable. If you can manage to get your hands on one of these watches, you’ll be making more than just a visual statement.

A more affordable and sportier alternative is the Oris Divers Sixty-Five ref. 01 733 7771 3158-07 8 19 15. This watch is part of the Cotton Candy collection released in the spring. Undoubtedly, the bronze variant with a pink dial requires a fair bit of courage to sport. Bold dial aside, this timepiece is a solid everyday companion boasting a 38-hour power reserve, 38-mm case, sapphire crystal, stainless steel case back, and water resistance to 100 m (10 bar, 328 ft). According to the manufacturer, this series of watches aims to bring a smile to wearers’ faces by conjuring up feelings of warmth and optimism associated with better times. What better way to start the fall?

3. A Casual Fall Favorite: The Return of the Letterman’s Jacket

Sporty and casual, letterman’s jackets have something refreshingly youthful about them, and they are definitely back for fall 2022. Add in a few extra details or patches, and these collegiate-style coats become appealing eye-catchers. If you want to go all in, make sure you color coordinate your sneakers – and your timepiece.

What model better suits this look than the Club Campus Neomatik from NOMOS? The brand from Glashütte, Germany is known for its minimalist, Bauhaus-inspired designs and high-precision watchmaking. The Neomatik (ref. 765) is no exception to these rules. Its white silver-plated dial is clean and tidy, and offers no distractions from the combination of Arabic and Roman numerals and bar indices used to mark the hours. The stainless steel case is fitted with a sapphire crystal and is now available on a metal bracelet in addition to a leather strap. The automatic DUW 3001 powers the timepiece and features NOMOS’ in-house swing system. Not only is this movement incredibly precise, it also has a power reserve of 43 hours and is surprisingly flat. The watch will easily slide beneath the cuff of your new jacket – not that you’ll want it tucked away. The NOMOS Club Campus Neomatik can hold its own with its striking design, but it also leaves plenty of room for you to go a bit wild with your fall jacket choice.
