Finding the best partner look for Valentine’s Day

By Jorg Weppelink

It’s Valentine’s Day! If you’re giving a gift to your loved one, a watch is a nice idea. How about getting matching watches for you and your partner? The image of elderly couples wearing the same jacket and riding matching bikes might spring to mind, but that’s not quite what I mean – unless you want it to be like that.

All jokes aside, there is something very special about buying matching watches as a couple. It’s the perfect opportunity to find a watch that you both love, and to share your passion for watches and the stories and adventures that will accompany them as you move forward in life. That’s reason enough to check out some great watches that make for brilliant couple’s watches for Valentine’s Day.

Looking at the Different Options

What are your options for picking the right couple’s watches? First, there is the option of buying the same exact model, available in men’s and women’s sizes. Another way to go is buying matching watches in the same size. This comes down to finding a men’s watch that a woman can also wear. The other way around is tougher, as men tend to be less likely to size down.

The Difference Between Men’s and Women’s Watches

It’s also good to highlight the differences between men’s and women’s watches. One of the biggest differences is size. Because women tend to have smaller wrists, they often wear smaller watches than men. However, men’s watch sizes have become smaller in the last decade due to changing trends in men’s size preferences. At the same time, we’ve seen that women love to wear slightly bigger watches, creating a nice bit of overlap. That means finding a unisex watch between 34 mm and 38 mm is a lot easier than it used to be.

Another difference is that men are generally more interested in the technical aspects of watches, while women tend to put more emphasis on style and prefer to wear a watch as a piece of fine jewelry. Because men are generally more interested in the technical specs, you often see men’s watches with mechanical movements, sometimes equipped with extra complications. Due to women’s smaller wrists and lesser focus on movements, many brands equip women’s watches with quartz-powered movements. Plus, women’s watches are often decorated with gemstones to match the jewelry they wear.

What brands cater to both men and women?

Traditionally, luxury brands like Patek Philippe, Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Vacheron Constantin have often offered men’s and women’s models of the same watch. Recently, we’ve also seen more affordable brands like Longines, Tissot, and Tudor do the same thing. So let’s take this chance to highlight some of the best options currently on the market.

1. Rolex Oyster Perpetual

Our first pick is the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The perfect entry-level Rolex, it looks amazing on both men’s and women’s wrists. The current generation Oyster Perpetual is available in 28, 31, 34, 36, and 41 mm. All sizes are available with a black, dark blue, pink, or silver dial.

The 31, 36, and 41-mm variants also come with several alternative dial options. You and your partner can match dial colors, or the two of you can each pick your favorite.

Another great option would be to buy a 36-mm Oyster Perpetual with different dial colors to switch things up, as it’s the perfect size for both men and women.

2. Tissot PRX

A second great pick is the hugely popular Tissot PRX. Until recently, the PRX was only available in 40 mm, making it better suited for men. But last year, Tissot added a 35-mm PRX to the line-up, making it perfectly possible to find a pair for him and her. The Tissot PRX is available with both quartz and mechanical movements.

There’s also a wide array of dial colors to choose from. The look of the dials will depend on the type of movement in the watch, so for the perfect pair you should choose either two quartz or two mechanical models. Either way, the PRX is a stylish and affordable choice for a couple’s watch.

3. Cartier Tank Must

Popular French luxury brand Cartier offers many models in men’s and women’s sizes. The most famous collection by far is the Cartier Tank, which offers a wide range of watch options. One Tank timepiece we love is the Cartier Tank Must.

The watch is available in stainless steel with either a small, large, or extra-large case. If you go for a traditional Cartier, your best dial option is the silver dial with Roman numerals. But if you like a more colorful and minimalist look, there are slick dial options in full black, red, blue, or green, with just the Cartier logo and the hands hovering above it to indicate the time. Matched with the same color strap used for the dials, these are among the most stylish options.

Ultimately, it’s about finding watches that you both love and that will tell the story of your life together. Both in the actual selection of the watch and in the adventures it will accompany you on, watches represent so much more than an instrument to tell time. Watches tell family stories, making the right couple’s watch the perfect Valentine’s Day gift.
